Abstract

The volume asks about the role of the body in law. Representatives of philosophy, theology, and jurisprudence examine the physical, material, or natural (pre-)conditions of law, which law does not cover or covers only to a degree.

Abstract

The technical design of security systems has a high impact on its acceptance. To understand the influencing factors, an acceptance model for smart video surveillance is developed. To improve acceptance different technical components are designed and implemented. Lastly they are integrated into a prototype for fall detection in hospital environments and evaluated for the acceptance. The book combined theoretical work on understanding acceptance with practical work into developing new systems.

Abstract

Humanity is struggling with ever larger amounts of data, which is not only annoying but also an existential problem in the information society. Remarkably, the law has so far hardly addressed this problem of excessive information. This essay compiles the legal regulations that exist at certain points. Legal approaches to solving the abundance of information are formulated, but warned of the associated restriction of freedom.

Abstract

This volume provides a comprehensive analysis of civil liability for invasion of personality interests in Europe. It is the final product of the collaboration of twenty-seven scholars and includes case studies of fourteen European jurisdictions, as well as an introductory chapter written from a US perspective. The case studies focus in particular on the legal protection of honour and reputation, privacy, self-determination and image. This volume aims to detect hidden similarities (the 'common core') in the actual legal treatment accorded by different European countries to personal interests which in some of these countries qualify as 'personality rights', and also to detect hidden disparities in the 'law in action' of countries whose 'law in the books' seem to protect one and the same personality interest in the same way.

Abstract

This collection of essays explores current developments in privacy law, including reform of data protection laws, privacy and the media, social control and surveillance, privacy and the Internet, and privacy and the courts. It places these developments into a broader international context, with a particular focus on the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. Adopting a comparative approach, it creates an important resource for understanding international trends in the reform of privacy and data protection laws across a variety of contexts. Written by internationally recognised experts, Emerging Challenges in Privacy Law: Comparative Perspectives provides an accessible introduction to contemporary legal and policy debates in privacy and data protection law. It is essential reading for academics, policy makers and practitioners interested in current challenges facing privacy and data protection law in Europe and in the common law world.
